6-Day Photographic Mentoring Workshop
Cairngorms, Scottish Highlands

Introduction

This workshop is a 50 / 50 split between field work (making images in the surrounding Wester Ross highland landscape) and Digital Darkroom Editing / image interpretation techniques carried out in a studio environment.

During our time together we will be based in the Cairngorm region of the Scottish Highlands.

Please note: This workshop is not about learning Photoshop-CS. Instead, its aim is to teach you how to interpret your work with the skills you have.

Informal Small Group Setting

Bruce likes to run his photography-workshops in a friendly, intimate group setting. This trip has a maximum group size of six.

Unlike a lot of workshops with up to 12 or 16 people on them, running with a smaller number allows everyone to have space in which to photograph. It also means more quality time for Bruce with each participant.

Synopsis

Learning to 'see' whilst out making images is a pretty important skill to work on during any workshop, but the art of 'seeing' shouldn't just stop at the point of capture.

Learning to 'see' is an extremely valuable asset whilst editing your work.

What we do with our work, how we manipulate it, should come from a strong understanding of tonal and colour relationships within the image, as well as your own personal vision.

This workshop teaches you to see themes, patterns and relationships within your images. We will also cover how to use these as cues to take your editing in a particular direction.

Required Fitness Level

Moderate Grading

Most locations are close to the vehicle. But you should be able to walk for up to 20 minutes up & down slopes and over uneven and boggy ground with your tripod and backpack.

There are some rocky beaches so you should be confident moving around a rocky terrain.

What's included

• Transportation from/to Inverness
• 5-nights dinner & breakfast in private lodge
• Private room with en-suite bathroom
• Lunch
• 4 days tuition in field and studio environments
• Tonal Relationships e-Book
• Fast-Track to Photoshop e-Book

What to bring

I’m finding increasingly that many of my students do not think they need grads. I use them extensively in my work, and I think they are still extremely important.

So the choice is yours. To get the full benefit of my advice while working with you out in the field, I will be suggesting the use of certain grads at certain times. It would be great if you can bring them.

• A set of hard-graduated ND filters
• A set of FULL-ND filters
• A laptop with Photoshop CS* Installed
• Your own mouse and keyboard if you prefer
• 20 to 30 images to edit. Please bring RAW files and also any edited Photoshop edits of the RAW files.

* Photoshop CC and some older versions are also acceptable for the workshop.

Photoshop CS* Experience Required

You must bring along your own laptop with Photoshop CS* installed and fully working.

This workshop has a focus on image interpretation techniques in the digital darkroom. It is expected that you are reasonably familiar (but not an expert) of Photoshop CS*. Having some knowledge of Layers / Curves and Masks would be helpful. Photoshop Elements and Lightroom are not suitable for this course.

Please Note: The focus of this workshop is to teach you image interpretation skills to realise the best prints possible. The focus is not on teaching you Photoshop CS*, although you may pick up some new skills while on the course.

* Photoshop CC and some older versions are also acceptable for the workshop.
