5-Day Photographic Mentoring Workshop

Introduction

Harris is a beautifully compact island with wondrous expansive beaches and a rugged eastern side. The Isle of Lewis and the Calanish stones are only 1 hour away from our base and we will head there in the evening to shoot the stones during sunset.

This trip is specifically great for simplifying your compositions as most of the beaches have a lot of space where only light and tone are the predominant features.

We are staying down on the beaches, in two different houses with our own private caterer. The houses are beautiful. Please note however that bathroom facilities are shared. Being near the beaches is ideal. The nearest hotel is 30 to 40 minutes away.

Informal small group setting

Bruce likes to run his photography-tours in a friendly, intimate group setting. This trip has a maximum group size of six.

Unlike a lot of workshops with up to 12 or 16 people on them, running with a smaller number allows everyone to have space in which to photograph. It also means more quality time for Bruce with each participant.

Please note: this is a mentoring workshop, not a tour. Its main aim is to explore the island of Harris and get daily feedback from me in the form of daily critiques and editing sessions. We will have plenty of time in the mornings and evenings to shoot.

Easy Grading

Most locations are close to the vehicle. But you should be able to walk for up to 20 minutes over uneven and boggy ground with your tripod and backpack.

There are some rocky beaches so you should be confident moving around a rocky terrain.

Our Chef

While we are on Harris, we will have our own chef, so we can have our meal times to suit our photography.
Aggie is a professional chef and loves to come to do this trip with me, as it's as much an adventure for her as it is for us!

Our Chef Aggie at work in the kitchen on Harris during the 2022 workshops. Cinnamon french bread and baked bananas for breakfast.

Getting There

Travelling around Scotland is much slower than you may expect for such a small country. The quickest way to get to Harris by flying from Glasgow to Stornoway (1 hour) via LoganAir.

If travelling from abroad, I would recommend flying to Glasgow (avoid Heathrow). Please anticipate a stop over in Glasgow on the way out and back to your travel plans.

There is limited transport options on Harris so I will coordinate with you which flights to take from Glasgow so I can meet the whole group at the same time.

Accommodation

We are staying down on the beaches (to avoid travelling times as the nearest hotel is 30 to 40 minutes away).

You will be in one of two beautiful houses (sole room occupancy) but the houses have non-ensuite rooms.

Payment Terms

Three incremental non refundable payments:
• Initial Depost of 30% is required to secure your booking.
• Second deposit of 30% six months before the start date.
• Final balance due 3 months before tour start date.

Cancellation Policy

Each of your deposits are non-refundable, and a commitment from you to promise to follow through with your booking. I recommend that you take out the necessary travel insurance as detailed below to safe guard your investment in the trip as soon as you book.

Travel Insurance

I require that you take out travel insurance that covers you for trip cancellation(by you) at the time of booking. This kind of travel insurance safeguards your investment in the event that you cannot make the tour due to an unforeseen circumstances between the time of booking the trip and the commencement date.

Specifically, cancellation coverage typically includes:

1. Medical emergencies: Illness, injury, or death of you, your travel companion, or a close family member.
2. Home emergencies: Damage to your home, such as a fire or flood, that requires your immediate attention.
3. Work-related issues: Job loss, unexpected work obligations, or a change in your work schedule. Other unforeseen circumstances: Jury duty, denied visa, or theft of travel documents.

Please check the small print when taking out travel insurance. All deposits are non refundable.
